Hoxie downs Sr. Girls in regular season finale

The number 2 ranked team in all of 3A, the Hoxie Lady Mustangs made the trip to Corning Monday, February 4 for both schools’ regular season conclusion. Hoxie (23-2) (16-0) used a massive second quarter to bury the Cats in this outing, 68 to 39. Coach Jerry Songer had his girls ready to play from the get go after a back and forth first quarter of action. Corning only trailed 16 to 12 after the opening frame before the Lady Mustangs went on a tear. Hoxie outscored the Lady Bobcats 28 to 2 in the second quarter. It would have been easy for the black and gold to come out flat in the second half and for this game to get much uglier than it already was, but that didn’t happen. Corning came out and fought hard all the way to the final buzzer. The Lady Cats  actually won the second half battle but fell well short of the ultimate goal thanks to a rough second quarter. Hoxie is an extremely talented team that is deep and can dominate a game in multiple ways. The Mustangs are a serious threat to win state this year pending any unforeseeable setbacks. A bright spot for Corning was how well they shot as a team from the free throw line in this game, going 12 for 16. Katie Clifton led the way in scoring for the black and gold. Clifton netted 11 points with nine of those points coming from beyond the arc. Steffani Hampton contributed nine points hitting on two of her three point attempts. The twin towers Haley Arnold and Ariel Martin added seven points each in the loss.
