Heavily favored Hoxie downs Corning Sr. Girls

Coach Jerry Songer and his Senior Lady Bobcats Basketball Team traveled south to visit the Mustangs of Hoxie on Thursday, January 3. Hoxie (14-2) (9-0) came into the contest ranked number two in state in all of 3A. It was to be a tall, tall task for the road Cats and that proved to be too big of a hurdle to overcome. Hoxie, like they have done to many opponents this year, dominated from the opening tip to the final whistle.

The Lady Mustangs won in a convincing manner 66 to 27. This was the Bobcat’s first game without star point guard Kelsey Watson. The black and gold simply struggled to put the ball in the basket at long periods of time in this game and had no answer for the high powered Mustang offense. Steffani Hampton and Emma Russom led the way with seven points each.

Hampton went five for six at the free throw line. Ariel Martin scored six points and Katie Clifton added five points in the Bobcat loss. One bright note for Corning was the efficient free throw shooting. The Lady Cats shot 12 of 15 from the charity stripe. The tall tasks don’t get much easier with a stout number 7 ranked Trumann team coming to Corning Monday, January 7.
