The best in Arkansas high school football rivalries

The second article in a two-part chronicle of Arkansas high school football rivalries.

Out of all the small town school rivalries in Arkansas high school football (classification 3A and lower), which is the best? First, we should take a look at a few of the notable rivalry games. We will start locally with Walnut Ridge-Hoxie. The two towns literally run into another. It seems every five years or so someone transfers to the rival school adding more fuel to the fire.

Atkins-Dover is a heated rivalry game with no love lost for either team. Just last year the alumni from both teams conjured up an alumni rivalry game between the two schools to hopefully be played every year. They can’t get enough of beating each other.

The Gravette-Gentry game has many labels, but the most common is the Highway 59 rivalry. There’s just 13 miles that separate these two schools near the Oklahoma border in west Arkansas.
