On canning day I was forever having to go to the store for standard emergencies including running out of salicylic acid (for green beans, I think), more sugar when were making jelly, more jar lids or sealing rings, a box of ceiling was, a box of paraffin, and salt. And the famous last words before I took off to the store, “And you come straight back home, we need that right now and had better not have to come looking for you.” In other words, don’t start any fights along the way, don’t stop at Harry Lasater’s store to look at the candy, don’t be trying to win a bitter chocolate rabbit or something else on one of the punch boards at Clyde Lasater’s store, stay out of the horse watering trough in front of Rhea Hardware, don’t be stopping at Bert’s Cafe to spend a penny or two for Guess Whats and don’t take Blackie (dog) along because they don’t want him inside the grocery store.

I usually did just as I wanted to once I set out for the store and sometimes got into a heap of trouble.
