Few people know that the worst maritime disaster in U.S. history occurred in Marion, Arkansas, at the end of the Civil War. Over 1,800 people were killed on the Mississippi River after the steamboat Sultana exploded and sank. It would not be a legal holiday, but would be commemorated by an issuance of an appropriate proclamation by the governor. The bill had overwhelming bipartisan support, and thankfully passed by a vote of 88-1.
