Bursting our filter bubbles . .
When did being openminded become a bad thing? Is it just me or is being open to different points of view no longer valued? That single idea of being open to various ideas and points of view is at the heart of education. Our service men and women fight for our right to be able to have differing opinions; among other rights. I’m concerned that as a society we are beginning to live in our own filter bubbles. A filter bubble usually refers to social media. It’s when an Internet user encounters information and opinions that solely reinforce their own beliefs. This is done by algorithms, particularly on Facebook. If you’re a Facebook user, you have probably noticed that a topic or item you have searched, liked or shared on the Internet, be it, on Google or an online store; suddenly appears on your Facebook wall in the form of ads, memes and articles. It works that way with your political leanings as well.
