Carrel D. Hester, 91, a resident of Riverview Manor Nursing Home, passed away Monday, December 5, 2016, after a six month illness. Graveside services will be held at a later date at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Weerts Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Carrel was born in 1925 in Datto, AR to Carrel and Clara Irene Hester. He graduated from Corning High School in 1943 where he was a National Honor Society Student. He also excelled as an athlete in baseball. He was scouted by the Saint Louis Cardinals, a tryout with the Cardinals was scheduled, but never came to pass as he was drafted into the Army during WW II. Carrel also re-enlisted and served in the Army during the Korean conflict, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant.
After WW II, Carrel moved to Rockford, IL where he became involved as a machinist, later taking night classes and working as a draftsman and process engineer at various plants. He married Betty Lou “Tootsie” Anderson in 1948. The couple was married for 47 years until her death in 1995.
In 1970 the family moved to Davenport where he was transferred for J. I. Case. After retirement, he started C & J Pilot Cars, escorting oversize loads. He continued doing this until he was 85, so he was able to travel the entire United States and parts of Canada doing something he loved.
Survivors include his son, Dr. Kevin (Erin) Hester of Bettendorf; a daughter, Shelly (Roland) Shaw of Rockford; two grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Caroline McKinney of Jonesboro, AR; and a brother, Dewayne Hester of Dallas, TX.
In addition to his parents and wife, Carrel was preceded in death by an infant son; four brothers; and one sister.
