Issue 1: The Vote for Roads What’s at stake for Clay County?
In Nov. 2019 Gov. Asa Hutchinson kicked off the “Vote for Roads. Vote for Issue 1” campaign. Issue 1 proposes a constitutional amendment on the 2020 general election ballot to make permanent the half-percent sales tax for highways. The half-percent sales tax was originally approved by voters in November 2012 and it was to expire after 10 years. Cities began receiving the half-cent sales tax money in July of 2013.
While much is said about larger Arkansas cities and counties concerning the half-cent sales tax, it’s important for rural residents, such as Clay Countians, to know the effects and facts concerning the sales tax money received that benefits their region.
