Corning pool in good shape for its age
Summer is around the corner and plans to open the Corning pool are being discussed by city officials. Last Thursday, April 4, Mayor Greg Ahrent asked Alan Smith, owner of Aquatic Masters in Walnut Ridge to come to Corning to look at the condition of the city’s aging Olympic-size swimming pool. Smith has been in the pool business for 26 years and has had his own business for 16 years. Smith made the trip to Corning on Friday and met with Water Superintendent Tracy Robinson to assess the condition of the pool and take measurements for a commercial subcontractor in order to obtain an estimate.
As Smith inspected the pool he said he told Robinson, “If you aren’t losing much of the water, this is nothing. I’ve got city pools that lose eight inches of water a day. He said Robinson said, ‘Oh no, they’re only putting water in every three days.’ And I said, ‘Well, that’s splash out normal evaporation water, this pool is not even losing water then, most likely. Actually the pool is in really great shape, it just needs a face lift.” He said that if they proceeded with the job, they would do a little more than a facelift.
